Fragments, a modern mystery novel, follows the escapades of two unfortunate individuals as they wander the streets of San Francisco; one is implicated in a crime he did not commit, another is not implicated in a crime he did commit. A night watchman, paralyzed with a fear of the uncertain future, is afraid to go home because of what might happen once he leaves his post. An artist's misreading of Shakespeare leaves him in a feverish state as he tries to hatch a plot to escape an investigation into his activities.
