The year 1910 rests on a precarious threshold in history. It is not yet the cataclysm of war that would consume Europe and much of the world just a few years later, but neither is it the calm continuity of the nineteenth century. It belongs to that rare category of years that seem, in retrospect, to carry the last breath of an era and the first whispers of another. The people of 1910 did not know they were living at the edge of upheaval, but they felt the tremors beneath their feet.
It was the last full year of what many later called the "long nineteenth century," a time still bound by monarchy, empire, and tradition. In Britain, the death of King Edward VII brought to a close the Edwardian age, with its elegance, aristocratic confidence, and imperial certainty. Across Europe, royal houses still ruled with pomp, their portraits lining city halls and currency. Yet behind these façades, cracks were forming. Constitutional crises, nationalist movements, and labor unrest signaled that the authority of kings, lords, and emperors would not remain unchallenged forever.
