A Feeling of Home

The unusual warmth of that February day changed the lives of five people and the family and friends that surround them. It was uncertain if Gunther was going to wake up from the coma.

They took residency in the hospital waiting room each day, impatiently waiting for Gunther to wake up. Learning about his severe injuries, the progress and setbacks were an emotional rollercoaster, new challenges for this mother of three. The best this family could accomplish was to handle everything day by day. This crisis didn't hinder their ability to stay positive; unwavering, they each held onto hope individually and as a family.

Unprepared for the struggle and heartache that followed when Gunther woke up from his coma, his memory was intact. She didn't realize she was holding her breath until he recognized her and their kids. He could tell you important dates, places, and people.

Realizing that Physical therapy was effortless in comparison to the rest of Gunther's recovery. Unequipped to handle the rest of the recovery process. It was demanding, leaving her depleted of units each day. There were several occasions when Gunther was out of character and disconnected in some ways. Leaving her confused and unsure.

Two years later, Valentine's Day will never be the same. Gunther was a different person. Everyone is left striving to maintain a sense of what home and family mean.
