This Steampunk story is set in Victorian Britain in 1900. 24 year old gentleman inventor Jonathan Cook has lived in the countryside all his life. He has created a machine that he believes will consign war to the history books, but he doesn't know how to get it to the attention of the British government. He is introduced to the 34 year old Lady Evelyn Rothmere, the young wife of the aging Admiral Rothmere. She says she can get his machine to the authorities by using her husband's connections, but there is an immediate attraction between Evelyn and Jonathan and they start an illicit affair. Meanwhile spies are trying to get their hands on the plans for the machine. Admiral Rothmere has a dark secret that is discovered by a newspaper reporter; should the secret become public knowledge it would destroy the admiral and his wife, and destroy and chance of Jonathan's machine being accepted.
