As the earliest and most comprehensive extant anthology of prose and verse in China, Selections of Refined Literature (Wenxuan) holds immense documentary value. The writers and works it includes have frequently been selected by later anthologists. The literary vision articulated in its preface - which places equal emphasis on "profound thought" and "elegant literary expression" - has also exerted a lasting influence on later literary creation. The "Three Great Masters of the Yuanjia Era" - Xie Lingyun, Yan Yanzhi, and Bao Zhao - are outstanding representatives of medieval Chinese literature, and many of their works have become enduring classics. The establishment of their canonical status owes much to the disseminative power of the Wenxuan. Given the Wenxuan's high authority, most of the works it selected by the three masters have been canonized and received collective recognition from readers across successive generations.
