Bill Kestel has survived almost everything. The question is whether he still wants to.

The world has been breaking for a long time.

Bill has lost people he loved, abandoned people he couldn't face, and carried memories that have followed him farther than anything else. By the time he reaches the mountains, survival has become less a choice than a habit.

Then he finds a cabin.

It isn't much. A roof. A stove. A few supplies. Enough work to keep his hands occupied.

And there is the dog.

Bill repairs what is broken. Hunts when he needs food. Keeps the fire burning. Slowly, almost without realizing it, the man who had nowhere left to go begins creating somewhere to return to.

In the quiet, however, there are things work cannot fix.

So Bill begins to write.

But the wilderness offers no promise of peace. Winter, hunger, violence, and the brutal indifference of nature will test everything Bill has left. And when survival once again demands something from him, Bill must confront a question far more difficult than whether he is capable of staying alive.
