Launched in 1972, the Alfa Romeo Alfasud won immediate acclaim for its excellent handling, flat-four engine and compact but spacious design. It set new standards for small cars that would not be challenged until the launch of the VW Golf. In this book, Alfasud enthusiast Nigel Brown describes the development of Alfa Romeo’s first mass-produced car from concept to design under a highly skilled design team led by renowned engineer Rudolf Huska. The result was a technical package that maximised performance, handling and space in an attractive body designed by Giorgetto Giugiario. The book also covers the purpose-built factory in the south of Italy and the industrial relations and politics that would tarnish the reputation of Alfa Romeo. The author re-examines the evidence behind the claims of poor build quality and rust problems that were to bedevil Alfasud production and asks if it was any worse than other cars of the period.
The author covers the hatchback, saloon, coupe and estate versions of the Alfasud, as well as concepts and other derivatives. With its exceptional handling, the Alfasud was successful in racing and the author discusses its achievements, including wins in the British Touring Car Championship. Including tips for enthusiasts and current and potential owners, and accompanied by a wide range of archive and colour photographs, this book is a concise but complete guide to an iconic seventies classic.
