Alfred Seiland, Imperium Romanum

Der erste Band über die Imperium Romanum Arbeit von Alfred Seiland (*1952, St. Michael, Österreich) erschien zu den ersten Ausstellungen in den Jahren 2013/2014. Seit 2006 arbeitet Seiland an diesem Langzeitprojekt und besuchte Orte in ganz Europa, rund um das Mittelmeer und sogar in den USA, immer begleitet von seiner Großbildkamera. Seine Ziele sind Ruinenstätten des gesamten Imperium Romanum, von Armenien bis Portugal, vom Irak bis an den Hadrianswall in England. Vielfach zeigen seine Motive schwer zugängliche, ja sogar nichtöffentliche Plätze, die dem Touristen normalerweise verborgen bleiben. Seilands Fotografien konfrontieren den Betrachter mit dem Konflikt zwischen Antike und Moderne. Sie sind immer perfekte Kompositionen, in denen er Farbe fast malerisch einsetzt. Oft stimmen seine Bilder nachdenklich, wenn sie von Zerstörungen, die Menschen an dem antiken Erbe verursachen, erzählen. Band 2 der Opus Extractum Serie erscheint im August 2016. Weitere Bände und Ausstellungen sind in den kommenden Jahren geplant. This is the first volume in a series of books on the "Imperium Romanum" works by Alfred Seiland (*1952 in St. Michael, Austria). Starting in 2006 Seiland has been visiting antique sites around the Mediterranean, capturing them with his analog, large-format camera. His destinations are the ruins of the Roman Empire from Egypt, Libya, and Israel to Italy, and the museums of Spain to Turkey. His motifs are often difficult to access-some are not public places and otherwise hidden from tourists. Seiland's photographs confront the viewer with themes that shed light on the conflict between antiquity and modernity. They mirror famous showplaces of history with their architecture, sculpture, and works of art. Alfred Seiland condenses moments into perfect compositions, employing color like a painter. Nevertheless, some of the photographs are unsettling, because they time and again tell of the destruction by humans of antique legacies. All pictures are accompanied by longer explanatory captions which make references to the historical and modern, visible and invisible aspects of the captured places. A second volume "Opus Extractum II" is published in August 2016. As Alfred Seiland continues to work on "his" "Imperium Romanum" further volumes will follow in the future!
