An Assessment of Historical Economic Frameworks & A Prescription of Permacapital Economics

The global economic engine is broken. This book contains the blueprint for its repair.
We stand at a dangerous crossroad: Capitalism has unleashed unprecedented innovation and wealth, yet it is fundamentally undermined by a built-in instability that fosters catastrophic inequality, systemic fragility, and ecological ruin. Socialism, for all its noble intentions toward equity, has historically sacrificed efficiency and individual liberty for control.

The time for simple tweaks and ideological purism is over.

In this groundbreaking work, Hendrith Vanlon Smith Jr., the originator of Permacapital Economics, delivers a meticulously researched solution. He performs a sweeping, critical assessment of historical models-from Capitalism and Socialism to Circular and Doughnut Economics-and unveils a new, hybrid framework engineered for the 21st century.

Permacapital Economics is a principles-based system designed to achieve:

Reciprocal Prosperity: It is built on the ethical cornerstone that self-interest is only viable when it inherently serves others, structurally linking profit to social and ecological well-being.

The Key Constraint of No Waste: The mandate to Produce No Waste is the essential market constraint that channels innovation toward regenerative practices, forcing businesses to operate in harmony with, and even add value to, the natural environment.

Dynamic Stability: By marrying the pro-market innovation of capital with the deep resilience and reciprocal design principles of natural permaculture ecosystems, this framework replaces boom-and-bust cycles with "less extreme seasons of more and less growth".

Holistic Value: Traditional wealth is replaced by the Holistic National Wealth Index, recognizing that genuine national prosperity is measured not just by GDP, but by happiness, ecological health, and social cohesion.

Through rigorous analysis and concrete policy prescriptions for nations like the United States and India, Smith provides policymakers, business leaders, and concerned citizens with a proven, viable path to replace our current system with one that is simultaneously more profitable, more equitable, and fundamentally sustainable.

This is more than a book. It is the urgent manifesto for the next great economic epoch, and a critical prerequisite for a new order of the ages.
