Der aus Hameln stammende Karl Philipp Moritz veröffentlichte seinen negativen Entwicklungsroman in mehreren Teilen zwischen 1785 und 1790; er gilt neben Goethes "Werther" als bedeutendstes Werk des Sturm und Drang. Vom Autor selbst als psychologischer Roman mit stark autobiografischen Bezügen beschrieben, wird darin das selbstverschuldete Scheitern des ebenso talentierten wie auf Anerkennung und Erfolg erpichten Titelhelden geschildert: Dem kleinbürgerlich beengten Leben zuhause und in der Schule entflieht Anton Reiser in die Welt des Theaters, scheitert jedoch. Doch von dem Traum auf Selbstverwirklichung will er nicht lassen und fällt erneut eine Fehlentscheidung: Statt eines Studiums schließt er sich nochmals einer Bühnentruppe an, nur um wiederum einen schweren Rückschlag zu erleben.
