Zu Beginn der Präsidentschaft Clintons waren die USA nach der Selbstauflösung der Sowjetunion und dem Ende des Ost-West-Konflikts eine Weltmacht ohne Gegner. Nach dem 11. September 2001 war die Situation eine andere: Setzten die USA in ihrer Außenpolitik während der Präsidentschaft Clintons zunächst auf einen Assertive Multilateralism, folgten sie in den ersten Amtsjahren Präsident Bushs einem Blunt Unilateralism. Eine Delegitimierung amerikanischer Weltpolitik nach außen (und innen) war die Folge. Präsident Obama kündigte eine multilaterale Rückbesinnung amerikanischer Außenpolitik an und rückte den Gedanken kluger Macht in das Zentrum seiner Weltpolitik. §Der Band geht den Fragen nach, was die Betonung von multilateralen oder unilateralen Strategien in der amerikanischen Außen- und Weltordnungspolitik seit den 1990er Jahren faktisch bedeutete und wie unterschiedliche Theorien den Wechsel zwischen multilateralen und unilateralen Strategien in zentralen Poli-tikfeldern amerikanischer Außenpolitik erklären können.
