Baba: The Man Who Shaped Kenya Without Ever Ruling It chronicles the remarkable life of Raila Amolo Odinga (1945-2025), born into a politically prominent Luo family in western Kenya. His father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's falling out with President Jomo Kenyatta defined the early trajectory of Raila's lifelong commitment to political reform and opposition.

Raila pursued engineering studies in East Germany, earning a master's degree before returning to Kenya. He soon became entangled in pro-democracy activism against Daniel arap Moi's authoritarian one-party regime. Detained without trial for six years starting in 1982, he endured further arrests and eventual exile to Norway. He returned in time for the 1992 multiparty elections, securing a parliamentary seat and establishing himself as a formidable opposition figure.

In 2002, Raila played a pivotal role in the National Rainbow Coalition that ended Moi's successor Mwai Kibaki's path to power. However, disillusioned by Kibaki's failure to honor power-sharing promises, Raila formed the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The bitterly contested 2007 presidential election sparked widespread violence that claimed over 1,300 lives, culminating in a power-sharing agreement that installed Raila as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. During this period, he helped steer the adoption of the transformative 2010 Constitution.

Raila contested the presidency five times (1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022), each defeat accompanied by persistent claims of electoral irregularities from his supporters and allies. A surprising 2018 "handshake" reconciliation with President Uhuru Kenyatta briefly bridged historic divides, yet State House remained beyond his reach. In his later years, he pursued pan-African roles, including as African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development.

Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at age 80 in Kerala, India, while receiving medical treatment.

The book's central argument is that although Raila never captured the presidency, his influence on Kenya's political evolution surpassed that of many who did. He was instrumental in dismantling the one-party state, championing the progressive 2010 Constitution, and fostering a resilient culture of electoral scrutiny and accountability. Above all, he embodied the affectionate title bestowed upon him by millions: Baba, the father of Kenya's modern democracy.
