Babylonian-Assyrian Birth-Omens and Their Cultural Significance

In ancient Babylonia and Assyria, the birth of a child-or even an animal-could be interpreted as a message from the gods, revealing the fate of kings, kingdoms, and individuals yet to come.

In Babylonian-Assyrian Birth-Omens and Their Cultural Significance, renowned Assyriologist Morris Jastrow, Jr. examines one of the ancient Near East's most fascinating systems of divination. Drawing upon cuneiform omen collections, he explores how unusual births, physical abnormalities, twins, and other remarkable features observed in newborn humans and animals were interpreted by Babylonian and Assyrian diviners. Jastrow places these practices alongside other major forms of Mesopotamian divination, including astrology and the examination of sacrificial livers, revealing a sophisticated culture devoted to discovering divine intentions through signs in the natural world.

Moving beyond the omen texts themselves, Jastrow traces their wider cultural significance, connecting ancient beliefs about abnormal births with later traditions concerning monsters, fabulous creatures, physiognomy, and folklore. Scholarly yet accessible, this remarkable study offers a window into the religious imagination of ancient Mesopotamia and humanity's enduring desire to discover meaning in the mysterious and extraordinary.
