Der Überlieferung zufolge wurde die "teutsche Operette" Bastien und Bastienne von Wolfgang Amadé Mozart für einen Freund der Familie, den Modearzt und Magnetiseur Franz Anton Mesmer komponiert. Mit seinen versteckten Pikanterien und koketten Anzüglichkeiten eignete sich dieses Singspiel über Liebe, Eifersucht und Intrige vortrefflich zur Unterhaltung der illustren Abendgesellschaft, vor der es im Mesmer'schen Gartenpalais auf der Wiener Landstraße im Spätsommer 1768 uraufgeführt wurde. Auf Veranlassung des österreichischen Generalkonsuls in Istanbul, Paul Jenewein, wurde Bastien und Bastienne beinahe zweihundertfünfzig Jahre später wieder ganz im Sinne seiner ursprünglichen Intention zur Aufführung gebracht. Der vorliegende Band umfasst neben dem zweisprachigen Librettoabdruck (Deutsch und Türkisch), wissenschaftliche Beiträge, die aus theater- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive den Themenkomplex rund um Mozarts Werk sowie den Kontext der Neuinszenierung diskutieren.
