Bis zu Siegfrieds Tod tritt sie in allen Schlüsselszenen in Erscheinung. Ihr Charakter gibt aber einige Rätsel auf. Woher kommt ihre schier übermenschliche Kraft? Wer waren ihre Eltern? Wieso ließen sie zu, dass Brünhild sich dermaßen über alle damals üblichen Rollenverteilungen zwischen den Geschlechtern hinwegsetzte? Und kannte sie Siegfried vielleicht von früher?Fangen wir mit ihrem Namen an. Dieser setzt sich aus dem althochdeutschen brunna, brunia was soviel wie Rüstung oder Panzer heißt und hiltia, Kampf, zusammen. Man könnte ihren Namen demnach mit "Die mit der Rüstung/dem Panzer kämpft" oder "Kämpferin der Brünne" übersetzen.
