In 1906, Robert Peary stood at the edge of the known world, looked across an empty horizon, and wrote a coastline into existence. His own diary says he saw nothing.
Eight years and a hundred thousand dollars later, a team of American scientists sailed north to find the landmass Peary had named after the San Francisco banker he hoped would fund his next expedition. What they found instead was ice - hundreds of miles of it, crossed on dog sledges, guided by Inughuit hunters whose expertise the expedition's own leaders would ignore at exactly the wrong moment.
They proved Crocker Land was a mirage. Then one of their own officers shot and killed the guide who had just saved his life, and the expedition's commander decided the truth was worth less than the institutions funding him.
No inquiry was ever opened. No charge was ever filed. The killer came home to a full naval career and a happy retirement.
Crockerland is the true story of a fabricated island, the four-year Arctic stranding it caused, and the murder two of America's most respected scientific institutions chose to bury rather than report - reconstructed from expedition diaries, institutional archives, and the Inuit oral history that preserved the truth the official record tried to erase.
It is a story about what happens when an institution's credibility becomes more valuable than the facts it was built to protect - told twice, eight years apart, by the same men, for the same reason.
