Othello is a small town in Eastern Washington, thirty miles from Moses Lake, planted on the edge of the Potholes. It's not an old town. It didn't exist except as a railroad crossing until irrigation came in during the 1950's. Now like most towns that grew fast, it is desperately trying to forget the past.The county sheriff is pot-bellied, balding, and tired. He is divorced and lives in the next town down the road in a dismal apartment. He regrets that his job has turned into arguments with the county council, managing deputies, and keeping the Adams county mayor's happy. But he loves his county and has never thought of leaving.Into the middle of this drops the dead body. Nobody is more shocked than the sheriff.
