Voltaires Tragödie DER FANATISMUS ODER MOHAMMED stellt Macht und Manipulation exemplarisch dar: Der religiöse Fanatismus wird zur politischen Waffe. Das Stück ist ein drastischer Ruf der Warnung. Der katholische Klerus ließ das Stück sofort verbieten, Voltaire widmete es sofort dem Papst. Der Fanatismus oder Mohammed erzählt eine haarsträubende und gewöhnliche Geschichte: Hirn und Herz eines jungen Mannes werden gewaschen, die Religion lässt ihn zum Mörder werden. Sein Auftraggeber ist der Prophet Mohammed, der die Stadt Mekka erobern will - und triumphiert. Die Neuübersetzung der Tragödie wird ergänzt durch Voltaires Widmungsbriefe an Friedrich II. und den Papst, sowie durch zwei schonungslose Streitschriften: In ihnen rechnet Voltaire mit den drei Buchreligionen gleichermaßen ab. Die Predigt der Fünfzig zerlegt die Bibel, Von dem Korane und dem Mahomed den Koran - dieser Essay wird in einer zeitgenössischen Übersetzung von Gotthold Ephraim Lessing präsentiert. Es geht Voltaire nicht um eine einzelne Religion, er schreibt gegen den Missbrauch des Göttlichen und gegen den Fanatismus an.
