Gustav Falke (1853-1916) wurde nach seiner Laufbahn als Buchhändler und Klavierlehrer zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts hin ermöglicht, einzig von seinem schriftstellerischem Schaffen zu leben. Er pflegte fortan beste Kontakte in die Hamburger Literaturszene, in der er hoch geschätzt wurde. Nach anfänglichem Hang zum Impressionismus hat er seinen Weg immer mehr im volkstümlichen und bürgerlichen Stil gesucht, welcher auch die vorliegende Novelle durchzieht.§Diese spielt in einer städtischen deutschen Familie, die zeitweilig den Sohn eines vielreisenden Kaufmanns aus Afrika aufnimmt. Durch seine fremde Erscheinung erlangt er viel Aufmerksamkeit und Zuneigung, auch vom Mädchen Blanche, das jedoch noch von einem weiteren Jungen begehrt wird.
