Derby is central to England, both geographically and in terms of its contribution to the England's history, including its industrial history and its involvement in mining, agriculture, textiles and the war. Awarded city stats in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth II, Derby had previously been one of a small number of towns to have a cathedral but not a city status. The World Wars also impacting Derby, and slum clearance in the 1920s and 30s saw the city become less populated as families moved to the outlying suburb.
