Deutschlands Rolle in der Europäischen Union ist im Vorfeld und Umkreis der Deutschen Ratspräsidentschaft des Jahres 2007 vielfältig thematisiert worden. So stammt etwa vom ehemaligen Präsidenten der Republik Polen Aleksander Kwasniewski das große und verantwortungsmahnende Wort: "Europas Zukunft hängt von der Zukunft Deutschlands ab". Dies kann in einem Integrationsverband gewiss nicht bedeuten, dass es allein auf ein einziges Land ankommt. Jedoch trägt Deutschland als großes Land in der Mitte des europäischen Kontinents zweifelsohne eine spezifische Verantwortung. Inwieweit Deutschland dieser Verantwortung gerecht wird und werden kann, war Gegenstand des interdisziplinären Jahreskolloquiums des Arbeitskreises Europäische Integration. Der vorliegende Band enthält die zehn Texte, die zur Veröffentlichung bearbeitet wurden, ergänzt um drei weitere Beiträge. Sieben Erörterungen widmen sich Grundlagenfragen (Maurer, Müller-Graff, Breuss, Wessels/Diedrichs, Schmid, von Ruckteschell, Wessels), sechs Untersuchungen befassen sich mit Einzelfragen (Fastenrath, Heinemann, Teichmann, Folz, Janowski, Hrbek).
