Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit grundlegenden Aspekten des metaphorischen Sprechens. Methodologisch liegt der Untersuchung das Konzept einer kommunikativen Grammatik zugrunde, das im Anschluß an die sprachanalytische Philosophie Eingang in die Linguistik gefunden hat. Ausgehend von einer intensiven Diskussion gängiger Begriffe und Theoreme widmet sich die Arbeit der Frage, wie das Bilden und Verstehen von Metaphern auf dem Hintergrund eines pragmatischen Modells adäquat beschrieben werden kann. Auf der Grundlage eines umfangreichen Zeitungskorpus wird an einem Beispiel aus dem Multimedia-Diskurs aufgezeigt, wie eine Metapher in den Sprachgebrauch eingeführt wird und unter welchen Bedingungen es von der wiederholten Verwendung zur Habitualisierung und schließlich zur Konventionalisierung einer metaphorischen Lesart kommt.
