Gabriele Kett-Straub untersucht die lebenslange Freiheitsstrafe mit all ihren rechtlichen Facetten. Insbesondere geht es ihr um die Legitimation der Strafe, ihre Ausgestaltung als absolute Strafandrohung und die Aussetzung des Strafrestes zur Bewährung gemäß §57 a StGB. Sie erörtert ausführlich, warum unsere Gesellschaft dieser Sanktion als Höchststrafe bedarf und widmet der Bestimmung der besonderen Schwere der Schuld ein eigenes Kapitel. Außerdem behandelt die Autorin aktuelle Fragen wie die Kombination der Strafe mit der Sicherungsverwahrung, die besondere Schwere der Schuld als Gegenstand einer Verständigung und die Anrechnung einer überlangen Dauer eines Strafverfahrens auf eine lebenslange Freiheitsstrafe.
