" La méditation du Principe est le principe même de la philosophie. " Cette sentence par laquelle débute le présent ouvrage ne décline pas seulement le projet d'un livre, elle traduit l'ambition d'une œuvre. Son auteur, Stanislas Breton, disparu le 2 avril 2005, métaphysicien original et génial, parvenu alors au faîte d'une recherche initiée dans les universités romaines, poursuivie dans les Instituts catholiques de Lyon de Paris et relancée à l'École normale supérieure d'Ulm, en déroulait alors la thèse dans une étonnante fulgurance. Trente ans exactement après sa première publication, celle-ci se trouve à nouveau, plus actuelle que jamais, présentée au public. Les quatre parties qui la structurent sont consacrées au concept antique de " Principe " à l'" Ineffable " auquel il se trouve nécessairement confronté, à ses usages en philosophie et en théologie, et à la critique à laquelle le soumet la pensée contemporaine. Elles déchiffrent, chemin faisant, ce qui décide, sous des modes bien différents, de l'" organisation du pensable " à l'intérieur des philosophies et des théologies. Ainsi réédité, cet ouvrage se livre à l'inspiration de nouvelles générations soucieuses d'honorer et d'exploiter, dans la ligne du " Fonds Breton " une œuvre d'exception. -- 'Meditation of the Principle is the very principle of philosophy.' This opening sentence of the present volume does not simply set out the book's plan, it also conveys its ambition. The author, the original and brilliant metaphysician Stanislas Breton, who died on April 2nd 2005, began his research in Roman universities, continued in the Catholic Institutes of Lyon and Paris and then took it to a summit in the École normale supérieure in the Rue d'Ulm. He then went on to produce a truly stunning thesis. Exactly thirty years after its initial publication, it is being made available again, more topical than ever. Its four parts are devoted to the antique concept of 'Principle' and the 'Ineffable', to which it is necessarily confronted; its employment in philosophy and theology; and the criticism to which it is subjected by contemporary thinking. In the process, the author deciphers what, in different ways, determines the 'organisation of the thinkable' within philosophies and theologies. This republished volume will serve to inspire new generations who wish to honour and take advantage of this exceptional work, in the same vein as the 'Breton Archives'.
