We do not truly die until the last living person speaks our name for the last time.

That is the quiet urgency behind this book.

Over nearly a decade, Bridget Harrington and Michael Moore have traveled New Mexico's back roads, searching for communities that contributed to the development of the state and now exist largely beyond public memory. What they found - in faint map references, cemetery records, census ledgers, land documents, and brief mentions in local newspapers - forms the documentary record you hold in your hands.

Echoes Across New Mexico examines settlements established through agriculture, homesteading, rail corridors, and land grants: places where people lived, worked, raised families, and maintained full social and religious life before economic change, environmental conditions, and shifting infrastructure led to their decline or disappearance. These are not the ghost towns written about by others for tourism or casual exploration. They are the ones that rarely appear in guidebooks or popular histories, surviving only through fragmentary evidence and firsthand documentation.

Each chapter reconstructs what can still be established, grounded in verifiable sources: field photography, archival research, historic maps, newspapers, and contemporary accounts. Organized alphabetically, the book allows each location to stand independently while contributing to a broader historical record of settlement patterns, migration, labor, and loss across New Mexico.

This is not a travel guide or a romantic treatment of abandonment. It is a documentary record of places that existed, the people who lived there, and the remaining evidence of their presence on the land - built for genealogists tracing New Mexico roots, regional historians filling gaps in the official record, librarians and historical societies, and anyone who believes that fading places deserve to be identified, named, and known before they are gone entirely.
