In 2018, Guinness World Records named Elizabeth Báthory the most prolific female murderer in history. The number behind the title is 650 young women, and it comes from a single servant girl who never saw the evidence she described.
Elizabeth Báthory: Royal Intrigue, Disputed Evidence, and the Making of Hungary's Blood Countess Legend follows the life of a sixteenth-century Hungarian noblewoman who has become one of the most notorious figures in European history. Born in 1560 into a family whose name means "good hero," she grew up among princes and kings, educated in four languages, in a country caught between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Turks. She married one of Hungary's most feared military commanders and ran his estates through years of war. Then, in 1610, she was arrested and confined at Csejthe Castle. She was never put on trial and never given a verdict.
This book places the accusations in their historical setting: the violence of sixteenth-century noble life, the shifting loyalties of Transylvania, and the ambitions of a Habsburg king who owed her family a debt. It examines the investigation led by the Palatine of Hungary, the confessions taken under torture, the three witnesses who claimed to have seen anything for themselves, and the bargain struck behind closed doors. It also traces how rumour became legend. Tales of blood-bathing and vampirism appear nowhere in the trial records, yet they spread across Europe through the vampire scares of the eighteenth century and the gothic fiction that followed.
Readers will come away with:
- A clear understanding of the Habsburg, Ottoman, and Transylvanian world that shaped her life
- The evidence for and against the charges, including the political motives of those who accused her
- Insight into how a historical woman was transformed into the figure of the Blood Countess
- A fuller picture of her life as an estate manager, an educator of young women, and a supporter of war widows
Whether Elizabeth Báthory was a serial killer, the victim of a conspiracy, or both, the answer lies buried beneath four centuries of folklore. Begin with the history, and judge the legend for yourself.
