Emil Orlik (1870-1932) was a painter, graphic artist, photographer, medallion maker, and craftsman: an all-round talent. A decisive factor in his artistic development was a trip to Japan in 1900-01, during which he learned the art of woodcarving from Japanese masters. He was a member of the Secession in Vienna, and was appointed in 1904 as a professor in Berlin, where he created designs for stage sets and costumes for Max Reinhardt. His portraits of personalities from art, theater, music, literature, film, cabaret, and politics are a kaleidoscope of the intellectual, cultural, and economic life of the Weimar Republic. Orlik's extensive graphic oeuvre-woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs-has now been documented in detail for the first time and is presented in this catalogue raisonné.
