Das Bedürfnis nach Emotionen wird anhand der Persönlichkeitsvariablen "Need for Affect" und "Need for Cognition" aufgeschlüsselt und mit den affektiven Reaktionen des Arbeitslebens (Organizational Commitment, Job Involvement und Arbeitszufriedenheit) in Zusammenhang gestellt. Neben einer ausführlichen Definition dieser oben genannten Begriffe führt der Autor eine Untersuchung bei jungen weiblichen Auszubildenden in konträren Berufsgruppen durch. Zum einen Berufe, welche sich durch ein hohes emotionales Anforderungsprofil auszeichnen, zum anderen Beschäftigungen, welche bevorzugt analytische Tätigkeiten beinhalten. Die Grundfrage lautet: Weisen Personen ein höheres Organizational Commitment, Job Involvement oder höhere Arbeitszufriedenheit auf, wenn ihr persönliches Verlangen nach Emotionen dem emotionalen Anforderungsprofil ihrer Tätigkeit entspricht? Die Innovationskraft dieser Arbeit liegt darin, erstmals das menschliche Bedürfnis nach Emotionen als mögliche Determinante für Arbeits- und Organisationsspsychologische Untersuchungen vorzuschlagen.
