Ending Unnecessary Suffering:
How Contraction Hijacks Your Nervous System and How Expansion Restores Peace
- An 80 day Healing Journey-

"This book is for anyone facing their darkest moments-not with demands to think or strive, but with the simple gift of being held in tenderness and awareness."

Most suffering isn't caused by life itself.
It's caused by what happens inside your nervous system-
the way it contracts into fear, defense, and overwhelm.

But contraction is not permanent.
Expansion is always available.
And awareness is the key that restores peace.

In Ending Unnecessary Suffering, Michael Patrick offers 80 short, poetic daily guides that blend inspiration with practical nervous system tools.

Each day includes:
• A simple teaching about contraction and expansion
• A nervous-system practice to restore calm
• A Calming phrase to carry with you throughout the day

Open to any page whenever you feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed.
This book is both a calming companion and a practical guide-
a way to end unnecessary suffering, one breath at a time.

Awareness is already here.
Your nervous system can remember Peace.

Author's Note

This book did not arise from theory.

It was born out of decades of lived inquiry into the innermost Self. For over forty years, I lived within contraction-fear, anxiety, depression, and the turbulence of bipolar disorder-until awareness itself revealed what had always been whole and untouched.

Through meditation, self-inquiry, and the timeless wisdom of Advaita Vedanta, I came to see that suffering is not only emotional or mental, but rooted in the contraction of identity around the ego. What you hold here is not an abstract teaching, but a direct expression of that recognition. The words return again and again to the same truth: contraction is not who you are, and awakening is simply remembering the Self that has never been absent.

My work blends awareness, creativity, and an intimate understanding of the nervous system. Through poetic daily guides and simple practices, I seek to help readers soften contraction, restore peace, and live from expanded awareness.

I am also a highly sensitive person (HSP)-a trait shared by about 20% of the population, including animals-born with a finely attuned nervous system. This sensitivity has shaped my way of perceiving the world, allowing me to create art and writing that touch the subtle layers of human experience.

I offer these pages not as answers, but as gentle mirrors for your own seeing. May they serve as a daily companion on your return-whether you come to them as a seeker, a healer, or one longing for rest.

Awareness is both the beginning and the end of this journey.
It is who you are.

- Michael Patrick
