This book makes a compelling case for valuing experiences of resonance in various academic and societal fields. It does this with help of several critical explorations of this concept, which was introduced by German sociologist Hartmut Rosa to foreground the importance of affective, emotional, transformative and uncontrollable experiences in socio-political contexts that he characterizes as alienating. Based on a critical reading of Rosa's theory, developed with help of ideas conceptualised by Theodor W. Adorno, Gilles Deleuze, Hannah Arendt, Judith Butler and others, this book presents the notion of a spectrum of resonance, which includes experiences that are characterized as either critical or affirmationist in nature. This spectrum of resonance is employed in different contexts: it is contrasted with the discipline of postcritique to analyse various forms of aesthetic experience, which are illustrated with references to Edgar Reitz's film Heimat and to the music of Nick Cave and Kayhan Kalhor. Furthermore, the spectrum is embedded in the fields of museum studies, memory studies and trauma studies to show how experiences of resonance contribute to the constitution of political and social identities. Since the latter exploration concerns memory practices in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the book is also driven by the aim to decolonize resonance theory.
