Sein Kommentar ist zugleich Paradigma für die Verbindung von jüdischer Auslegungstradition mit historisch-kritischer Exegese. Greenbergs Vorgehen ist von dem konsequenten Bemühen bestimmt, das Ezechielbuch als zusammenhängende Prophetie im zeit- und theologiegeschichtlichen Kontext des 6. Jahrhunderts und vor dem Hintergrund der altorientalischen Sprach- und Bildwelt auszulegen. Besondere Forschungsrelevanz besitzt dieser Kommentar dadurch, dass hier ein herausragender Kenner der hebräischen Sprache die Facetten des Urtextes erschließt und dabei die großen mittelalterlichen Kommentare des Judentums heranzieht.
