Das Buch stellt die Person Frédéric Le Play als Kämpfer für die Sozialreform vor. Er lebte von 1806 bis 1872, war Bergbauingenieur, Professor an der Bergbauhochschule, Sozialforscher, Senator unter Napoleon III. und organisierte drei Weltausstellungen. Im Limousin begründete er im Schloss Ligoure das Modellprojekt einer Stammfamilie, die für ihn als Best-Practice-Beispiel und grundlegend für eine gut funktionierende Gesellschaft gilt. In dem Buch wird seine Biographie erläutert und er kommt mit Originaltexten zu Wort, einer Reisebeschreibung aus dem Jahre 1829, der Monographie über eine Handwerkerfamilie im Rheinland und mit Auszügen aus seinem Werk über die Organisation der Arbeit. Anschließend werden seine etwa 150 Jahre alten Texte im Verhältnis zum Hier und Jetzt reflektiert.
