Mitte des vorletzten Jahrhunderts waren in Deutschland aus der katholischen und evangelischen Kirche heraus liberale religiöse Gemeinschaften entstanden. Zuerst nannten sie sich "Deutschkatholiken" bzw. "Protestantische Freunde", später nahmen sie die Bezeichnung "freireligiös" an. Einige Gemeinden bestehen bis heute. Im Nationalsozialismus jedoch hatten sie einen schweren Stand. Im Kirchenkampf hatten sich auch die freireligiösen Gemeinden zu bewähren. Christian Langenbach hinterfragt, ob ihnen dies gelungen ist. Nach einem Überblick über die Geschichte der Freireligiösen bis 1933 stellt er Verfolgungsmaßnahmen der staatlichen Stellen gegen freireligiöse Gemeinden und einzelne Mitglieder an Beispielen dar. Im Zentrum der Darstellung steht die Auseinandersetzung zwischen den Freireligiösen und ihrer Umgebung. Welche Standpunkte bezogen sie zum nationalsozialistischen Staat und seiner Ideologie? Wie äußerten sie sich über "Blut und Boden", "Führer" und "Volksgemeinschaft"? Weitere Aspekte sind die Beziehung der Freireligiösen zum Christentum sowie die seinerzeit propagierten Entwürfe einer "deutschen Religion".
