Froude & Carlyle, a Study of the Froude-Carlyle Controversy

"Froude & Carlyle, a Study of the Froude-Carlyle Controversy" is a meticulous examination of one of the most significant and heated literary disputes of the Victorian era. Written by Waldo Hilary Dunn, this scholarly work delves into the complex relationship between the celebrated historian James Anthony Froude and his mentor, Thomas Carlyle. The book addresses the intense public and critical outcry that followed Froude's publication of Carlyle's "Reminiscences" and his subsequent multi-volume biography, which many contemporaries viewed as a shocking betrayal of Carlyle's legacy.

Dunn provides a scholarly and balanced defense of Froude, analyzing the primary documents, personal correspondence, and biographical methods that fueled the controversy. By exploring the motives and evidence on both sides of the debate, the author sheds light on the ethical responsibilities of a biographer and the challenges of representing a major intellectual figure's private life for a public audience. This study remains an essential resource for those interested in 19th-century historiography, Victorian literary circles, and the evolution of modern biographical standards. It offers a fascinating look at how personal reputations are constructed and contested within the annals of history.
