Das Interesse Europas an Geschichte und Kultur Portugals hat in den letzten Jahren deutlich zugenommen. Es fehlt jedoch eine aktuelle Überblicksdarstellung, die auf der Grundlage der neuesten Forschungen die Geschichte des Landes von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart wissenschaftlich fundiert und gleichzeitig gut lesbar darstellt. Die vorliegende Geschichte "Portugals" füllt diese Lücke. Das Buch behandelt zuerst die Entwicklung des portugiesischen Königreichs im Mittelalter bis zur Entdeckung Brasiliens im Jahr 1500. Anschließend stellen die Autoren die "große Zeit" der Seefahrernation Portugal während der Kolonialexpansion vor. Vor allem auch die Entwicklung der letzten beiden Jahrhunderte wird ausführlich behandelt: die konstitutionelle Monarchie, die Republik, die lange Diktatur Salazars, schließlich die "Nelkenrevolution" und die Rückkehr des Landes in den Schoß der europäischen Demokratien.
