The Hávamál is more than a collection of ancient Norse wisdom. Within its verses are teachings concerning life, spiritual development, the Runes, and the practical application of Rune Magick.
In Hávamál: The Words of the High One - A Metaphysical Interpretation, Rev. Jeff Rhoades examines the sayings attributed to Odin from a modern metaphysical perspective, exploring their practical and spiritual meaning while guiding the reader from the wisdom of the original verses into the mysteries of the Runes.
Beginning with teachings on wisdom, friendship, love, self-discipline, spiritual development, and the search for knowledge, the book follows Odin's journey toward the discovery of the Runes and examines the eighteen Rune-Spells described in the Song of Spells. These Rune-Spells are presented as practical formulas that may be visualized, drawn, carved, empowered through their Words of Power, and directed toward specific purposes.
The book then goes beyond interpretation and provides a practical system of Rune Magick. Readers are introduced to the twenty-four Runes of the Elder Uthark System and their metaphysical functions, along with an examination of the Runes as a symbolic model for the evolution of human consciousness.
A complete ceremonial framework for Rune Magick is also provided, including four Preliminary Rituals designed to prepare and balance the practitioner and the magical environment:
• The Ritual of the Circle of Thorns
• The Ritual of the Hail Storm
• The Ritual of the Guardian Elks
• The Ritual of the Sun Wheel
These are followed by A General Ritual for Rune Magick, which demonstrates how the eighteen Rune-Spells may be incorporated into complete ceremonial operations and adapted to the practitioner's chosen objective.
Also included is A Rune Meditation, designed to develop an intuitive understanding of the Runes and their forces, as well as Rune Magick for the Betterment of the World, which explores the application of Rune Magick beyond individual concerns and toward larger social and collective objectives.
Additional material includes guidance for creating and maintaining a Ritual Diary, a glossary, bibliography, and reference material for continued study.
Whether approached as an interpretation of the Hávamál, an introduction to the spiritual mysteries of the Runes, or a practical manual of Rune Magick, this book invites the reader not merely to study the wisdom of the High One-but to put that wisdom into practice.
