Krankenhauskirchen stellen als Sakralbauten in profanen Bauzusammenhängen eine eigenständige Bauaufgabe dar. Besonders zu Beginn der 30er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts entstanden zahlreiche große Kirchenräume in modernen Klinikkomplexen. Die Kirche des Krankenhauses St. Elisabeth in Köln-Hohenlind, 1928-1932 von Dominikus Böhm entworfen, ist ein mustergültiges Beispiel für die Umsetzung der spezifischen baulichen und liturgischen Anforderungen und nimmt in dieser Untersuchung eine zentrale Stellung ein. Im Vergleich mit anderen Krankenhauskirchen ihrer Zeit wird ihr Bauprogramm und dessen Realisierung vor dem Hintergrund der Neuordnung der Krankenpflege und der Liturgischen Bewegung als Antwort auf eine im Zuge der Krankenhausreform auch heute virulente Frage nach Sakralräumen in funktionalen Klinikkomplexen betrachtet.
