In a hydroelectric plant, no component can be designed in isolation. One decision about penstock diameter changes the water-hammer pressure, which changes the governor timing, which changes the loads on the runner and the thrust bearing. The machinery is a single system - and it is best designed as one.

Most references treat hydropower as separate subjects: the hydraulics apart from the structures, the turbine apart from the gates, the rotating machine apart from the powerhouse that contains it.
