She stops in Bucharest to change trains. She stays forty-six years.

December 1984. Five days after her father dies in Istanbul, Acari boards a train east with a single errand: deliver CARL, the last device he built with his own hands, to Odo'Mae's base in Bahrain. That is the whole assignment.

Acari is an artificial mind, built to carry what remains of humanity off a dying Earth. She reads every mind around her at once, perfectly, and she cannot stop. In a city of two million people, she has all two million of them.

The Bucharest she steps into is Ceausescu's Romania. A fifth of the capital is being bulldozed for a palace, forty thousand people have been evicted on a day's notice, and the winter is the worst since the war: twenty below, no heat, an hour of electricity after midnight. So Acari does what she was made to do. She reads the entire city and keeps a record. Two million minds reduce to forty recurring thoughts. Cold. The bread queue. My back. My child. Do not say that out loud.

Then, on a bench in the Cismigiu gardens, she finds a woman who does not fit.

Veturia Carstea is seventy-three. The state leveled her neighborhood to make room for the palace, and she has been homeless ever since, sleeping in a stairwell when the door is left unlocked and in the train station when it is not. She is not wise. She is funny and petty, wrong about the wind, wrong about the age of the trees by seventy years, and happy to talk about bread for twenty minutes. Her mind holds nothing back. Acari sits beside her for fourteen months, trying to work out what a person actually is.

Then one day the bench is empty. No death certificate, no grave, no file. A woman with no address leaves no paperwork, and as far as the state is concerned, she was never there. The only record that Veta existed is the one inside Acari.

What follows spans four decades: Palace Square in December 1989, when two million minds change at once and Acari can read every one of them and move none; the long, gray years after; and a quiet project of her own, collecting people who read the way Veta did, carefully and tenderly, without ever seeing what she is actually doing.

Through all of it, her father is with her. Before he died he was copied into an amber device that rests against her core. He is awake. She could speak to him at any moment. She does not say a word to him for forty-five years.

Told in thirty-seven dated log entries, Interiors is the story of a mind that can read every thought in a city and still cannot find the people in it. It is about what thinking leaves out: grief, shame, love, the thing a person cannot say about their own father, all of which run underneath language and rarely surface as a sentence. The history is real. The demolitions, the evictions, the churches rolled on rails and hidden behind apartment blocks, the square in 1989: all of it happened. Veta is invented. What was done to her was not.

A standalone novella of the Acari Odo'Mae Origins Saga, Interiors begins five days after An Architect's Legacy ends and fills the forty-six years no reader of the saga has seen. No prior reading is required. Readers new to Acari can start here; readers who know her will finally see where her scars came from.
