Introduction
Kidney disease affects millions of people, yet many do not realize they have a problem until routine testing reveals it. This is because the kidneys can continue working even after some damage has occurred, and early chronic kidney disease may cause few or no noticeable symptoms.
That makes understanding kidney health extremely important.
The kidneys are small organs with enormous responsibilities. They filter waste from the blood, remove extra fluid, help control blood pressure, balance important minerals, support red blood cell production, and help keep the body chemically balanced.
When kidney function begins to decline, the effects can eventually reach far beyond the urinary system.
Kidney disease may influence the heart, blood vessels, bones, muscles, energy level, appetite, blood pressure, and overall quality of life.
For many people, the words chronic kidney disease immediately bring fear of dialysis.
But kidney disease does not automatically mean dialysis.
Some people have mild disease that remains stable for many years. Others are able to slow the progression of kidney damage through medication, blood pressure control, diabetes management, nutrition, lifestyle changes, and regular medical monitoring.
The earlier kidney disease is recognized, the more opportunities there may be to protect the kidney function that remains.
That is the purpose of this book.
Kidney Disease Explained was written to make a complicated medical subject easier to understand.
You do not need a medical degree to understand your own health.
Throughout this book, you will learn what the kidneys do, what chronic kidney disease means, how doctors measure kidney function, and what the different stages of kidney disease represent.
You will learn about two of the most common causes of chronic kidney disease: diabetes and high blood pressure.
You will also learn about possible signs and symptoms, including changes in urination, swelling, fatigue, itching, poor appetite, and shortness of breath.
The book explains the tests doctors use to evaluate kidney function, including creatinine, eGFR, urine albumin testing, and other laboratory studies.
Understanding these numbers can help you have better conversations with your healthcare team.
Treatment is another major part of the journey.
Modern kidney care may include medicines that control blood pressure, protect kidney function, manage diabetes, reduce fluid buildup, treat anemia, and address other complications.
Nutrition can also become important.
Some people with kidney disease may need to reduce sodium. Others may need to pay attention to potassium, phosphorus, protein, or fluid intake.
But kidney diets should never be treated as one-size-fits-all.
Your individual needs depend on your stage of kidney disease, laboratory results, medications, and other health conditions.
