You are the one who covers the shift, fixes the file, catches the thing before it goes out wrong. Everyone says so. It has been said warmly, in front of people, for four years. It has never once been said in a room where money is decided.

You are not disorganised. You are load-bearing.

WHY THE USUAL ADVICE BOUNCES OFF

Set boundaries, they say, in the tone of somebody who has never had to do it on a Tuesday at half past four. The advice assumes a request - and almost nothing you carry was ever requested. It arrived. It settled. There was no meeting at which it was agreed, which is exactly why there is no meeting at which it can be disagreed with.

The second problem is that the usual advice treats this as an emotional matter. A great deal of it is administrative. Work that is written down nowhere cannot be resourced, cannot be discussed and cannot be counted at a review. That is not a failure of self-esteem. It is a documentation problem, and documentation problems have documentation solutions.

THIRTY SITUATIONS, IN SIX PARTS

How you became the one · the work that is not yours · credit · time · the people · being someone other than the reliable one.

Among them: the first time you fixed something that was not yours. The task with no owner. The email you have written three times. Saying what something will cost before you agree. Somebody presented your work. The review where none of it is written down. The message at seven in the evening. Twenty minutes, forty times. The manager who says lifesaver and means it. Training the person who will be promoted. What happens when you stop.

EACH ONE IS BUILT THE SAME WAY

- WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE - the situation, in detail, without sympathy

- WHY IT KEEPS HAPPENING - the mechanism, which is usually structural rather than personal

- WHAT TO DO - four things, small and mostly boring. Several involve writing something down. One involves a timer

- THE SENTENCE - one line you can actually say out loud

- WHAT NOT TO DO - two moves that feel right and cost you the ground

WHAT THIS BOOK WILL NOT DO

It will not tell you your rights. There is not one word here about contracts, hours, dismissal, discrimination or what an employer may do - and the omission is deliberate. Those answers depend entirely on where you live and what you signed, and a confident wrong answer from a book is worse than no answer. Where a situation touches that ground, the text says so and points at somebody qualified.

It will not promise you a promotion. Nothing can, and anything that did would be selling you something.

It will not pretend every workplace can be fixed. Situation twenty-five is about how to tell whether the constraint is your behaviour or the building, which most books in this section cannot say out loud.

And it is not therapy. The author is not a therapist, a coach, a lawyer or an HR professional, and says so plainly. No studies, no statistics, no surveys, no clients.
