Though the novel is set in modern day, the action takes place in an old home and in different worlds within our own planet. The family, consisting of Anne and her children Adam, Robin, Sarah, and Stephen, are close but dysfunctional. The children's father left to fight the war, but perished. Robin, the youngest, is a tough young girl, who despite losing her voice, has no trouble speaking her mind loud and clear. She has inside knowledge of the world of the supernatural around her. Adam, the second youngest, has a keen mind that easily grasps magic. Sarah, the eldest girl, is the rebel. She fights to suppress her alter ego, a side effect of having both darkness and light inside her. Stephen, the oldest son, takes care of the others. Nathan NK Hansen grew up on a farm in Alberta, Canada. He spent many happy hours imagining worlds where magic and adventure took place. He is a culinary student in Edmonton and plans to become a chef. This is his first published work. Blessed with abilities and gifts to fight and protect, the family joins forces with new recruits, as well as elves, and the last living Ancient. They fight to vanquish The Man, who has planned for decades to destroy all that exists in his quest for power. In gain, there must be loss, yet this family has yet to make the biggest sacrifice of their lives. Throughout the adventure, Anne's family finds time for love, friendship, and fun amid the chaos.
