The MEROX process technology is the means of controlling mercaptans (RSH) on hydrocarbon streams from the gas through distillates. The presence of mercaptans in the petroleum product like LPG etc is highly undesirable due to their foul odor and high corrosive nature. Although there are several processes known for the removal of mercaptans from petroleum products, the most common practice is to oxidize the mercaptans present to less deleterious disulfide with air in the presence of a catalyst.
