In an era when a man's reputation was his most valuable possession, honor was a guiding principle that could also become a dangerous obligation. In antebellum America, a person's honor determined their identity, shaped their character, and guided their behavior, often requiring them to defend it at great cost. Official trials were more than just legal contests-they were battles to protect reputations in a culture where failing to defend one's honor could lead to lasting disgrace.

Military Honor on Trial tells the true story of a bitter feud between Joseph Hooker, a future Civil War general, and George H. Derby, a clever and cheeky army engineer known as America's first western humorist. The setting of their conflict was Gold Rush-era California, in the small town of Sonoma, where military authority and the chaos of a rapidly changing civilian world clashed. The army in California was struggling with desertions and resignations due to the temptation of riches, and a single act of theft by a deserter sparked a chain of events. This led to accusations, arrests, and two dramatic courts martial. Their conflict also entangled notable future Civil War leaders, including Henry Halleck, William T. Sherman, Winfield Scott, Ethan A. Hitchcock, Braxton Bragg, George Stoneman, and many others.

For those especially interested in the Civil War, Military Honor on Trial sheds new light on Hooker's behavior and actions that alienated and incensed many fellow officers. His arrogance and political moves during the Mexican War, along with his dubious financial schemes in California, cost him his early military career and later came back to haunt him, at great cost.

Military Honor on Trial uses firsthand accounts and new evidence to explore how personality, ambition, and the pursuit of honor led to impulsive decisions with lasting consequences. The story goes beyond the courts martial, spanning several decades and exploring the lives of these men during major events in American history, such as Manifest Destiny, the Mexican War, the California Gold Rush, and the Civil War.
