L'empathie est une capacité fondamentale dans les relations interpersonnelles, qui implique à la fois une composante émotionnelle (contagion émotionnelle) et une composante cognitive (TDE, régulation...). Malgré ses multiples facettes (émotionnelle, cognitive, comportementale, de la vie quotidienne, etc...) il en ressort globalement la conclusion suivante : Aucun doute, il s'agit de « se mettre à la place », de ressentir et de comprendre ce que vit l'autre et a priori dans le but de le soulager. Dans le langage courant, l'empathie signifie d'ailleurs exactement la même chose. Il n'existe de fait aucun décalage entre l'acception « commune » et celle plus « scientifique » de l'empathie. Cela conforte l'idée que si l'empathie est très complexe dans son mécanisme, le phénomène comporte une dimension toute naturelle pour être ainsi, sans aucune réflexion ni connaissance préalable, si spontanément et de façon presque mécanique, appréhendé et « compris ».
