A powerful African migration novel about borders, belonging, exile, love and the unfinished search for home.

After surviving poverty, drought, unemployment, political disappointment and the painful collapse of dreams in Zimbabwe, Tawanda Moyo crosses the Limpopo River into South Africa believing that another country may offer what home could not: work, dignity, safety and a future.

But the border does not end at the river.

In MUKWEREKWERE: THE FOREIGNER PART TWO, Tawanda enters Johannesburg with wet clothes, fragile documents and a heart divided between the country that raised him and the country that now questions his right to exist. South Africa is supposed to be the land of green pastures. Instead, it receives him with suspicion, police raids, closed windows, low wages, xenophobic insults and the brutal word that follows him everywhere:

Mukwerekwere. Foreigner. Outsider. Stranger.

From the traffic lights of Sandton, where Tawanda sells bananas to drivers who judge him before they know him, to the crowded rooms of Alexandra, the spaza yards, taxi ranks, police queues, university corridors and nights of xenophobic fear, this novel tells the story of what happens after the migrant crosses the border.

This is not a simple story of arrival. It is a story of survival after arrival.

Tawanda discovers that Johannesburg is both cruel and generous. It humiliates him, but it also teaches him. It wounds him, but it also gives him community. Among vendors, workers, migrants and struggling South Africans, he finds what he calls the Republic of Foreigners: a world of bruised fruit, shared meals, borrowed airtime, warnings about police, laughter after bad news and people who are poor but refuse to disappear.

Yet belonging is never simple.

Tawanda remains emotionally tied to Tariro, the woman he left behind in Zimbabwe, whose love is stretched across distance, silence, remittances and postponed promises. At the same time, he is drawn into the world of Nomsa, a South African woman who understands poverty, danger and the borders that exist even inside one's own country. Through Nomsa, South Africa becomes more than a place of rejection. It becomes complicated. It becomes human. It becomes another kind of home.

As xenophobic violence rises and the chant "Abahambe" - "They must go" moves through the streets, Tawanda is forced to confront the deepest questions of migrant life:

Where does a person belong when home has failed him and exile refuses him?
Can love survive distance, poverty and survival?
What does dignity mean when a man is reduced to his accent, his passport, his labour and his desperation?
Can education still rescue a life after hunger has already rewritten it?
And what does it mean to be called foreign in a continent where so many people are displaced by history, poverty and broken promises?

Written with emotional depth, cinematic detail and unforgettable characters, MUKWEREKWERE: THE FOREIGNER PART TWO is a moving portrait of African migration, xenophobia, informal work, love, masculinity, education, survival and the long road between home and exile.

It is a novel about Zimbabwe and South Africa, but also about every person who has ever left home to survive.

It is about the mothers who pray at doorways, the fathers who carry silence, the lovers who wait across borders, the children who inherit questions they did not create, and the workers whose labour keeps cities alive even when those cities refuse to fully see them.

Above all, this is a story about human dignity.

Because a migrant does not cross once.

A migrant crosses every day.
