Newcastle in 25 Streets

Newcastle’s origins go back to Roman and Saxon times but the castle after which it is named was built by the Normans. The fortified town, under periodic threat from the Scots, became well known for its trade in coal and by the nineteenth century became a centre of ship building and other heavy engineering industries as well as a major commercial and cultural centre in the north of England. Today’s city retains its medieval street plan around parts of the city centre and riverside but its cityscape is renowned for its many neoclassical streets, such as Grey Street with links to Earl Grey Tea and Collingwood Street named after Admiral Lord Collingwood, and spectacular river crossings including the Tyne Bridge and High Level rail bridge. Newcastle in 25 Streets tell the history of this fascinating city through 25 of its most interesting and important streets. Through the centuries, the streets have witnessed significant events, attracted remarkable people and been home to notable buildings and the stories of these streets are part of the story of the city. The book will be of interest to all those who live in Newcastle or who have an interest in the area.
