She has spent fifteen years being nobody on purpose. Then a stranger calls her by name.
At twelve minutes past three on a Tuesday in December, night dispatcher Maren Cole takes a call from a woman who knows her console number, knows what happened on a county road six years ago, and will not say the rest on a recorded line. The woman is a dispatcher too. She has been listening to Maren's channel on a speaker in another county for six years, and she is calling because the last piece of evidence in the case Maren broke has just walked out of a building on a signature that nobody can explain.
Over seven nights Maren has to find out who took it, keep her brother alive on a tow rotation that somebody quietly moved to the west county road at night, and work under an acting supervisor who reads the night log to the sheriff's desk at two every morning.
She has one instrument and it has never failed her. She can hear a room. She can hear the floor under a caller's feet, the shape of the fear behind the words, and the exact moment a person decides to lie. And she cannot hear this woman at all, because this woman's voice was built the same way hers was, by the same card, over the same number of nights, to give a person on the other end nothing but the words.
The man who took the recording is careful. He is not cruel and he is not loud. He has thirty years in the office, a pickup with no transponder, a live feed of her screen on his desk, and one worked example of how a man makes a problem go away, because he asked for it, and the man he asked was kind enough to tell him.
At the end of it there is a woman alone in a car on a shoulder at mile marker nineteen, a lieutenant walking toward her door, and a sergeant nineteen minutes away. And a dispatcher at a console eleven miles off, holding the only thing she has ever had, which is that she knows where everybody is and she does not have to say.
No Record of This Call asked whether a call that leaves no record can be real. Note It as a Hangup asks what a record is worth when the people who keep it are the people it convicts.
