Pancreatic Pathology

The pancreas is an organ, which has both an endocrine and an exocrine function. It secretes several important hormones such as insulin, glucagon, pancreatic polypeptide and somatostatin. Also, it is responsible for the secretion of pancreatic juice, which contains digestive enzymes and bicarbonates for the break down of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and the neutralization of the acid. A perforation of the pancreas may potentially lead to pancreatic self-digestion and damage to organs within the abdomen. Some of the pathological conditions of the pancreas include pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, etc. The surgical removal of the pancreas or part of it is known as pancreatectomy. It can be of several types such as distal pancreatectomy, pancreaticoduodenectomy, total pancreatectomy and segmental pancreatectomy. These procedures are performed for the management of pancreatic cancer, tumor and pancreatitis.
