Zahnimplantate sind einer der praktikabelsten Ersatzstoffe für fehlende Zähne. Titan ist das Material der Wahl für Zahnimplantate, seit es von Branemark eingeführt wurde. Allerdings weist Titan einige wichtige Eigenschaften auf. Es wird von Fällen von Überempfindlichkeit gegenüber dem Material berichtet. Der Unterschied zwischen den Elastizitätsmodulen von Titan und dem umgebenden Knochen führt zu Stressabschirmung und Knochenresorption. Materialien auf PEEK-Basis können diese Probleme überwinden und einen brauchbaren Ersatz für Titan darstellen. Es handelt sich um ein Homopolymer mit einem einzigen Monomer.PEEK ist ein inertes Material, das mit dem umgebenden Gewebe gut verträglich ist und keine toxischen oder mutagenen Wirkungen aufweist. Daher kann es ein idealer Ersatz für Patienten sein, die allergisch auf Titan und andere Metalle reagieren. PEEK hat keine metallische Farbe; es ist beige mit einem Hauch von grau und hat ein ästhetischeres Aussehen. Der Hauptvorteil von PEEK als Implantatmaterial ist sein Elastizitätsmodul, das dem des menschlichen Knochens sehr ähnlich ist, so dass es günstige Spannungen und Verformungen erzeugen kann, die den Stressabschirmungseffekt und die Knochenresorption minimieren.
